The Four Pillars of Destiny

What is BaZi?

BaZi — often introduced in English as the Four Pillars of Destiny — is a traditional Chinese system that organizes birth information into four pillars and uses relationships among the elements and symbols to construct an interpretive framework.

A chart, not a label

Four pillars.
Many layers.

Each pillar is associated with a year, month, day and hour. Traditional BaZi interpretation considers the heavenly stems, earthly branches, Five Elements, seasonal context and relationships within the chart.

The purpose here is not to ask you to accept every traditional claim literally. It is to make the framework understandable enough that you can decide what is useful to reflect on.

BaZi in context

How is this different from astrology?

Western astrology commonly works with planets, signs, houses and aspects based on birth time and place. BaZi works with the Chinese calendar, stems, branches, Five Elements and pillar relationships. Both can be used as symbolic languages for reflection, but their underlying traditions and interpretive mechanics are different.
